Below are examples of how schools are using the SWAT concept:

From Julie Hill in Iowa

Pictured are 12 incredible 6th graders who have been members of the team since late Fall. I have been an educator for almost 20 years with 13 of those in early childhood classrooms, but once I got my master's degree in Educational Technology and became the district's technology coordinator, I have been more inclined to work with middle school and high school students.
I am back in the classroom this year for two periods out of the day. One is with a high school multimedia class and the other is with 6th graders for keyboarding/tech literacy.

I wanted to start small with the SWAT concept, so that's why I am only working with 6th graders this year, but when I move them on to 7th grade our Business Education teacher will continue with them and I'll train a new crop!

Here's what we've been working on.
Our main objective has been to train all of them on basic troubleshooting and maintenance of the 300 computers in the building. They were fast learners, so they are now going in to more specialized areas of interest for them.
1. Computer Buddies
2. Audio/Visual
3. Advanced TroubleShooting
4. Webpage development

Chicago, Illinois, Spring 2003, Sr. Mary Therese,

SWAT grew so much in numbers this year (because of your visit) that I had to organize three nights after school for the meetings: 1st and 2nd, 3rd & 4th, and another for the upper grades. I got their t-shirts, but made the mistake of letting them take them home to show their parents, and am still waiting for the return of all so we can take some photos.

The students are always asking, "Do we have SWAT tonight" and I always answer, "Yes". One day a boy said, "Are we having SQUAT tonight" and I knew I had to review what SWAT was and meant. [I was an 8th grade teacher for so long....] The little ones just finished Mother's Day cards. The middle graders are becoming experts in Kidspiration and Inspiration. The upper graders have
finished the class webpages (they'll be published on our main website when I get around to the editing...) and now are designing a HyperStudio multimedia presentation on how to use a digital camera in classroom projects. Then they'll go to the rooms to present the teacher and class.

This year the administration is including SWAT on awards day with an outstanding leadership award. I have a 4th grader who comes on the lower grade day to help; she also presented our lab and it's marvels to benefactors from our twinning parish. She will get the big award. Kevin and Joy at IIT are initiating SWAT teams this summer from the neighboring public high schools and will train them to help trouble shoot for teachers.

Peace,
Sr. Mary Therese

Thanks for emailing me!
I heard about the SWAT organization through Teacher Magazine. I had been considering a similar setup (this is only my 2nd year teaching computer, K-8) and then when I read about SWAT, I thought it would be perfect. It helped convince my principal too, since I was able to tell her that it's a nationally recognized club, like NJHS--she's actually going to give me a small stipend for leading the team!

I am offering membership to 6th through 8th graders next year. At our campus we have a Tech team of 4 people who are responsible for all three schools on our campus--Overbrook is the elementary school, St. Cecilia is the high school, and Aquinas is the college. I'm going to tell the high school about SWAT also. Anyway, since there are only 4 members of the tech team, they basically fix problems once they become really bad. Our SWAT goals are to help maintain the computers in our school--cleaning, running maintenance programs, to help teachers after school with lesson plans / tech integration--in the future, help them with teacher web pages. Our members will also be tech ambassadors when in their regular classrooms--if a tech problem in the classroom arises, our members will be the first line of defense. If they can't solve it, the tech team is called. We'll also create a web site of useful links and tips--solving tech issues, Internet searching, cool tech stuff kids like--so check back with us sometime. I'm sure I'll develop more things for them to do as we go through the year. I'm planning on meeting with them once a week after school for an hour.

If your principal sees your enthusiasm and willingness to improve the school overall, then he or she has a hard time saying no. This club especially helps students develop character, and I can definitely see how students who maybe aren't involved in other things will have a real opportunity to succeed and show leadership.
I will definitely keep in touch. It's so nice to be in contact with someone in a similar situation--most of the time, it seems, we computer teachers are all by ourselves. I'm attending the NECC Conference in Seattle this summer and hope to get even more ideas there.

Anyway, I'm so glad I read about SWAT! I can't wait to get the CD so we can get started.

Thanks so much!
Chelsy

LA, California-April 2003-Jose Aleman

I started a similar program in an elementary school a couple of years back. Basically, they were all 6th and 5th grade kids with an interest in computers. I trained them in basic troubleshooting, all the way to working with applications and creating their own web pages using html. Right now I work in a middle school as a tech coordinator. The librarian and I have a group of service students whom I train as well. They help solve many problems around the campus, and when there are not trouble calls, I have a set of activities that they have to complete. I wish they culminate with a better sense of what the role of technology plays in our lives and how to deal with it. We have our own website which you can find here http://www.lausd.k12.ca.us/Le_Conte_MS/ I heard about your program just by browsing on the internet. I thought the name would be appealing to the kids, and since you had generated this cd, I though it would be a good idea to take a look at it. Your concept was also very appealing because it concentrated on empowering kids. I will write some more to you in the future. Thank you. Jose

Look what happened in Summer 2002 with SWAT!

Cindy Newton and John Davis take SWAT to new dimensions!
They have demonstrated how SWAT can be a summer camp at the elementary and high school levels.

Hence, the "How To Start a SWAT Summer Camp Manual" will be developed this fall for other SWAT Leaders to replicate.
Also in development this fall is the "SWAT Kit".

If you have any suggestions or wish lists for the content of the manual or kit please email me at lmganfield@gmail.com
with
your ideas and I will be happy to address these needs in the design of the products.

SWAT Team in Rhode Island

I have just finished working with 15 Computer Buddies this year. They have been assigned to a classroom and began their work this week. I will soon work with a group of Web Weavers - the past two year's work can be viewed at http://"www.ri.net/schools/Narragansett/NES/SWAT/swat.html". SWAT has so empowered our students, many of whom feel they have no control over anything in their life. Our PTO purchased t-shirts for the students, so they really feel like they have a valuable role in the school.

SWAT in Indiana

Our team consists of 9 4th-6th grade students. Here is our web site. http://fayette.k12.in.us/eastview/computerclub.html You will find some info here along with a schedule of our meetings. Some of the highlights from this year - Surfin' Seniors where we invited senior citizens to come to a month of our meetings. Club members assisted seniors on a 1-1 basis instructing them on Internet usage and word processing. All School Christmas Program - The club created a PowerPoint presentation to go along with the Christmas songs for the program. We set an eight foot screen in the center of the stage. Decorated the floor area in front of it and had singers on risers to either side. An LCD projector projected the presentation from down on the floor. Students created and ran the presentation. It was quite impressive. We added an iMovie at the end of the SWAT team members doing things around the school and added rolling credits. We even added Our principal wishing us a Merry Christmas. Assisting teachers with creating class web pages. The students have been working on creating their own web sites that we hope to link to our page by the end of the school year. They then have been assigned to a teacher and have set up a framework of a page to the specifications of the teacher. The teachers have joined us for 2 meetings to adjust or add to their pages. Five new sites are now up and going. The students will continue assistance for the remainder of the year. Field trip in May - Our team will be going to Indianapolis to visit Conseco Fieldhouse and a TV station. At each stop, we are looking at technology usage and possible technology careers. We are also looking for ideas to implement during our televised, school-wide morning announcements next year.

SWAT in Georgia's High schools

We are new to the SWAT community. I started the club this year at Eagle's Landing High School--a metro Atlanta school--and have been impressed with the students' abilities and enthusiasm. So far we have been instrumental in the training of our staff. Here is a summary of what ELHS' SWAT Team has accomplished so far:Installed Microsoft Office to all the classroom computers in the school, approximately 115 computersPresented two Staff Development workshops to the faculty on PowerPointInstalled software to the Business Labs in our schoolPresented a workshop at the GAMA Convention (Georgia Association of Media Assistants) on March 10 Started a Peer Tutoring Program where SWAT members train a faculty member on a piece of softwareIn April, the SWAT Team will be offering two workshops for the faculty on Excel and AccessIn May, the SWAT Team will be getting training on computer repair That's everything from Eagle's Landing High School. I am interested in learning more about SWAT and would like to receive any additional materials.

SWAT in South Carolina

Dear Lucy,I am definitely going to continue SWAT. It has been so successful in my elementary school. (Orange Grove Elem. Charleston, SC) The students are great and the teachers really appreciate the help. Orange Grove'sSWAT recently presented at the Lowcountry Instructional Technology Conference in Charleston, SC. They developed the Power Point presentation and wrote their own speeches. My principal brought them to the conference for me and stayed to take pictures. I have a lot of support for my team. I am also planning to present at South Carolina' s EdTech 2001.Thanks for the great program!

SWAT-American International School Riyadh

Hi Lucy

Yes, the American International School Riyadh is still strong with our SWAT"club" although with my move to the high school, the elementary program diedout. THe high school club is going through a "grow up" and "take responsibility" phase as we are in the process of educating our first ever juniors. Next year we will add a senior class, and hence graduate our firstclass since the school's founding 42 years past.
